Ask the Lawyers
In honor of Law Day, the Emmet-Charlevoix Bar Association, in conjunction with the Petoskey District Library will present an “Ask the Lawyers” event, from 3:30-7:00 PM on May 1 at the Petoskey District Library. This free event, offered to the general public, will feature local attorneys volunteering their time to answer legal questions in the areas of criminal law, domestic/family law, probate, personal injury, automobile/ no-fault insurance, business and copyright/trademark law. Patrons will be seen on a first come – first served basis. Law Day, which was established by President Eisenhower in 1958, is held every year on May 1 to celebrate the role of law in our society and to cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal profession. The theme for Law Day 2017 explores how the 14th Amendment to the Constitution has transformed American democracy. The American Bar Association describes the 14th Amendment as “a source of inspiration for all those who advocate for equal justice under law.” Bar Association President Stuart Fenton explained, “We are so grateful to utilize the occasion of Law Day to give back to the community and provide this free legal service. Every lawyer has an obligation to do some ‘pro bono’ work, and this event represents an extension of that concept. Although lawyers are sometimes given a bad name in the public perception, at heart, most lawyers have a genuine desire to help people. This event demonstrates just that.” The “Ask the Lawyers” event, which is first come-first serve, will take place in the Library classroom on the lower level, and signs will be posted for attendees to easily follow. The event is also posted on the Library’s website at https://goo.gl/xCvItI. Along with Stuart Fenton, the “Ask the Lawyer” event is being coordinated by Val Meyerson, Director of the Petoskey District Library, and Tina DeMoore, local attorney and past Bar Association President. Prior to the “Ask the Lawyer” event on May 1, the Bar Association will also host a membership luncheon at which time an outstanding non-lawyer citizen who has given of his or her time and energy to strengthen the legal system will be honored with the Liberty Bell Award. The Emmet-Charlevoix Bar Association continues to serve the community beyond the courtroom by providing student scholarships along with grants and sponsorships to community organizations with ties to the mission of the Bar Association. Over the past year, the Bar Association has provided grants in support of Northern Community Mediation, the Michigan Supreme Court Community Connections Program educational outreach in northern Michigan and the five-time Tier 1 Petoskey High School debate team state champions. Any licensed attorney practicing in Emmet and Charlevoix counties is invited and encouraged to be a part of the organization.
