Name: Lifelong Learning: History of Yoga
    Date: March 23, 2017
    Time: 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM EDT
    Event Description:
Yoga has a long and fascinating history.  Yoga’s early origins can be traced back 5000 years or more.  As yoga developed through the ages, its style, intent, and focus have evolved and changed.  The goal of enlightenment through the body is a core idea though.  In modern times, the physical and mental benefits of yoga are key to its popularity.

In the Life Long Learning class, “History of Yoga” Rebecca Stevenson will share some of the highlights of yoga’s history and discuss the physical and mental benefits yoga practice can provide.  This class acts as an introduction to yoga and the reasons why the practice of yoga is beneficial.

Rebecca Stevenson was first introduced to yoga after many years of running had taken a toll.  She knew instantly that there was something special that needed further exploration.  In 2015, she obtained her 200-hour certification and is registered with Yoga Alliance.  Since then, she has studied with world class teachers across the country.  In her active yoga classes, Stevenson strives to incorporate many different components of yoga, focusing on incorporating breath with movement and intention.  As well as being a yoga instructor, Stevenson is a registered nurse and certified Reiki practitioner.  Stevenson works to integrate her western medical background and energy work into her yoga classes.

Life Long Learning classes are offered by the Petoskey District Library with the goal of tapping into the expertise of Northern Michigan teachers, business owners, and residents to share their knowledge and create unique opportunities to learn new things for the local community.  The classes are open to all and offered at a minimal cost.  To find out more about this class or learn about upcoming classes, visit PDL’s web site or contact Marty Samson or Jodi Haven at Petoskey District Library (231 758-3100) or email msamson@petoskeylibrary.org.

Stevenson’s class, “History of Yoga,” meets March 23, 2017 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.    Register at the library, at www.petoskeylibrary.org, or by calling 231 758-3100.  The cost is $10 to pre-register or $12 at the door.  Please sign-up early to avoid possible class cancelations.
