After 35 years in serving customers in northern Michigan Tom & Jaci Gallagher are beginning to take steps to allow for continued growth and a transition to new management. Over the next few years the Gallaghers will begin limiting time spent in the office and letting the management team take over the day to day operation of the business. Ownership will remain as is and Tom will continue to be available to share his experiences with both customers and his management team.

The management team includes long time office manager Karen Morse, Scheduling and Safety coordinator Alan Howard, Greg Gallagher, Estimators Keith Young, and Troy Rife.

Troy brings a new addition to the business as he is also a Licensed Landscape Architect. His services as an architect will be available for a fee to our customers. His expertise is in design of hardscape (retaining walls, patios, etc…) and has 27 years of experience since graduating from Michigan State University.  Harbor Springs Excavating has been installing hardscapes for as long as they have been in business with large boulder and precast concrete products. Troys addition brings the ability of design in house and allows for a complete project from ground breaking to final landscape of major features that effect the grading of the property.

Greg has completed college at Ferris State University where he studied in automotive management. He is currently shadowing his father (owner) to learn the ropes of the business. This includes oversight of projects, estimating, safety, fleet management and the accounting methods the business uses. It is anticipated that Greg will become well rounded in how the business operates before he steps into his father’s position.

Karen is our go-to person with 26 years’ experience helping to greet customers, perform sundry sales, tracking job cost and perform our bookkeeping and payroll functions.

Keith returned to our business 5 years ago after graduating with a business degree at NCMC and spending 8 years in management with another company. He is the person who will be the front line when customers call for estimates on their projects.

Alan has just begun with us and will assume the scheduling of work, keep our safety program up to speed and be sure that our employees have what is needed to perform their work safely, properly and efficiently. In addition Alan will also learn our bookkeeping system allowing him to assist Karen with her efforts and put him in a position to perform cost analysis on completed jobs to help keep us competitive
In addition to these management changes new technology is now flowing from our estimating efforts to our field crews. We are able to take information from our estimating software to the field so that the operators can grade with the help of an electronic total station. This allows the operators to view the plan from their seat of the equipment and move dirt more efficiently to the proper grades with greater accuracy and speed. It produces a real time picture of their relationship with final plan as compared to the ground they are sitting on. Once under way the computer can actually control the blade for greater precision. This is a unique opportunity that allows us to offer higher quality work and more economical grading for our customers from large home sites to commercial and public work projects.
Harbor Springs Excavating will continue providing their customers with the same quality service and products as they have for the past 35 years.
