DESCRIPTION:Carl O. Weaver Post 194\, Petoskey's American Legion post\, invites the public to attend a local observance of POW/MIA Day at Pennsylvania Park on Friday\, September 18. Starting at 6:30 p.m.\, there will be a simple ceremony with a moment of silence\, along with the reading of the names of servicemen from Michigan officially listed as possible POW/MIA.\n\nCommemorated on the third Friday of every September\, POW/MIA Recognition Day is intended to help Americans remember and do their part to account for those who have never returned. Officially recognized by a Congressional resolution in 1979\, the observance came after the families of more than 2\,500 Vietnam War POWs/MIAs pushed Congress and the President for full accountability. The date was chosen because it has no association with any particular war. \n\nAccording to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA)\, over 73\,000 are still missing from WWII\, many of whom may have been lost at sea. There are about 7\,800 from the Korean War and 1\,600 from Vietnam yet to be found and identified. Another 130 or so are missing from other conflicts not normally associated with war time service. Efforts to find and identify these service men are continuing and constant. So far in FY2020\, DPAA has identified the remains of 50 Department of Defense personnel from World War II\, 20 from the Korean War\, and 1 from the Vietnam War. With a current membership of 2.4-million wartime veterans\, The American Legion was founded in 1919 on the four pillars of a strong national security\, veterans affairs\, Americanism\, and supporting the growth and education of our youth. Legionnaires work for the betterment of their communities through more than 14\,000 posts across the nation. Petoskey's American Legion Post invites anyone who served honorably in the US Armed Forces since December 7\, 1941 to join.
