Aldo Leopold — author of A Sand County Almanac and one of the most influential conservation thinkers of the 20th century — spent his summers in Les Cheneaux. His family were longtime seasonal residents of the Les Cheneaux Club on Marquette Island. These are the waters he paddled.
On this trip, we will kayak through Hessel Bay talking about Leopold's life, his evolving ecological thinking, and his lasting influence on conservation — eventually paddling along the shoreline of Club Point and past the site of the Leopold family cottage. We'll take a break ashore at the Little Traverse Conservancy's Aldo Leopold Preserve, and Conservancy staff often join us on the water.
$175 per person · 50% deposit at booking. Part of every booking supports the Little Traverse Conservancy — $50 per person on trips of four or more, $25 per person donation if only 1–3 people book.
Everyone paddles in tandem kayaks on this trip — it keeps the group together and makes it easy to talk, ask questions, and share what we're seeing along the way. Booking solo? We'll pair you with another paddler. Come with shoes you can get wet.
