Employment Type: Seasonal, part-time during Assembly Season. Housing is not provided.

Organization Overview
The Bay View Association (BVA) is a National Historic Landmark and an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit offering Chautauqua-style programming in Performing Arts, Worship & Religious Life, Education, and Recreation. The Bay View community includes 444 Victorian cottages, 2 inns, 30 historic buildings, and approximately 900 members along the shores of Lake Michigan.
Position Summary
The Boys’ and Girls’ Club Director provides leadership and daily oversight of the Bay View Recreation Boys’ and Girls’ Club program serving youth ages 7–14. This position is responsible for supervising program staff, mentoring Leaders in Training (LITs), and ensuring the program operates smoothly, safely, and in alignment with the goals and traditions of Bay View Recreation.
The Boys’ and Girls’ Club Area Director oversees daily program structure, approves activity plans created by staff, manages behavioral challenges, and ensures
activities remain engaging, organized, and developmentally appropriate for participants.
Key Responsibilities
Program Oversight-
Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Boys’ and Girls’ Club program.

Ensure the daily schedule runs smoothly and remains organized and structured.

Review and approve activity plans developed by Head Leaders and Assistant Leaders.

Ensure programming is engaging, age-appropriate, and aligned with the recreation program’s goals.

Ensure all necessary equipment and supplies are prepared and available for daily activities.
Staff Supervision
-
Supervise and support Head Leaders and Assistant Leaders assigned to the program.
-
Provide guidance, leadership, and mentorship to staff.
-
Help staff stay organized, prepared, and aligned with program expectations.
-
Support staff in developing engaging activity plans and camp programming.
Camper Support & Behavior Management
-
Serve as the primary support person for behavioral challenges or campers needing additional guidance.
-
Help staff navigate behavioral situations while maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment.
Program Management
-
Maintain daily attendance records for the program.

Assist staff in staying within budget when planning activities.
-
Communicate regularly with the Recreation Director regarding program needs and operations.
-
Help support special events and cross-programming activities within Bay View Recreation.
Safety & Responsibility
-
Maintain a safe, structured, and healthy environment for all participants.

Ensure recreation policies and safety procedures are followed.

Monitor equipment, activity spaces, and participant well-being throughout the day.
Leadership & Mentorship
-
Serve as a visible and positive leader within the program.

Act as a mentor and role model for both campers and staff.

Foster an environment that encourages teamwork, respect, and fun.

Immediately report injuries, incidents, or concerns to the Head Leader, Area Director, or Recreation Director.

Assist with the implementation of daily recreational activities, games, and special events.

Actively engage with participants in a positive and encouraging manner.

Assist with setup, cleanup, and organization of program areas and equipment.
Qualifications

Experience working with youth ages 7–14

Strong leadership and staff supervision skills

Ability to mentor and guide young staff members

Excellent organizational and communication skills

Ability to manage group dynamics and behavioral challenges

Positive, energetic, and responsible leadership style

Preferred Experience

Camp, recreation, or youth program leadership experience

Experience supervising staff or mentoring youth leaders

Experience planning or overseeing youth programming

CPR/First Aid certification preferred
Work Environment
This position requires active engagement with children and staff in a fast-paced recreation environment and involves significant time outdoors.
