    Job Title: Assistant Swim Director
     Location: Bay View Association, Petoskey, MI
    Reports To: Swim Director
    Employment Type: Seasonal (Full-Time During Assembly Season).


    Position Summary
    The Assistant Swim Director supports the Swim Director in the daily operations of Bay View’s Waterfront, with a primary emphasis on afternoon programming, staff supervision, and water safety oversight. This seasonal leadership position plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, fun, and welcoming waterfront environment for cottagers, members, and guests.
     
    The Assistant Swim Director works closely with lifeguards and swim staff to uphold the highest standards of aquatic safety while preserving Bay View’s long-standing tradition of excellence in waterfront programming.

    Compensation & Employment Details

    • Pay: $2,400 plus $25 per hour for evenings and weekends.
    • Employment Type: Seasonal, full-time during Assembly Season. Housing is not provided.
    • Benefits: As part of working in a vibrant historic community, Bay View seasonal staff enjoy meaningful discounts on recreational programs, education classes, and performing arts tickets. Children of seasonal staff members may also receive select program discounts, encouraging family participation in campus life, subject to program guidelines. Not eligible for insurance, retirement, or other benefits.
    Schedule:
    • June–August: Primarily afternoons, with availability for evenings, weekends, and special waterfront events as needed.
     
    Organization Overview
    The Bay View Association (BVA) is a National Historic Landmark and an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit offering Chautauqua-style programming in Performing Arts, Worship & Religious Life, Education, and Recreation. The Bay View community includes 444 Victorian cottages, 2 inns, 30 historic buildings, and approximately 900 members along the shores of Lake Michigan.
     
    Key Responsibilities
    Waterfront Operations & Safety
    • Assist the Swim Director with daily supervision of lifeguards, swim staff, and waterfront activities, particularly during afternoon hours.
    • Ensure all safety protocols, rescue readiness standards, and emergency procedures are strictly followed at all times.
    • Provide direct lifeguarding coverage and maintain all required certifications throughout the summer season.
    • Conduct and document safety drills, monitor incident reports, and support emergency response as needed.
    Program Support & Supervision
    • Support the coordination and delivery of swim lessons, open swim, and special waterfront events.
    • Serve as a leader and mentor to younger staff, modeling professionalism, teamwork, and confidence.
    • Promote a positive, family-friendly waterfront atmosphere aligned with Bay View’s values of community, recreation, and respect.
    Facilities, Equipment & Daily Operations
    • Monitor waterfront conditions, water temperatures, and equipment readiness daily.
    • Post daily water temperatures on the waterfront whiteboard and raise appropriate waterfront flags.
    • Identify, document, and report facility maintenance or safety concerns in a timely manner.
    Communication & Reporting
    • Maintain regular communication with the Swim Director regarding daily operations, staffing needs, and waterfront conditions.
    • Assist with administrative record-keeping, including attendance logs, safety documentation, and incident reports.
     
    Qualifications
    • Current Lifeguard Certification, including CPR, AED, and First Aid (required).
    • Prior experience as a lifeguard or swim instructor (preferred).
    • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to make sound, timely decisions in a fast-paced, safety-critical environment.
    • Availability to work afternoons, selected weekends, and special events throughout the summer season.
