    Job Title: Tennis Director
    Location: Bay View Association, Petoskey, MI
    Reports To: Recreation Director
    Employment Type: Seasonal (Full-Time During Assembly Season)


    Position Summary
    The Tennis Director provides leadership and oversight of Bay View’s Tennis Program, ensuring high-quality instruction, strong staff leadership, and a welcoming, community-centered environment for participants of all ages and skill levels. This seasonal leadership position oversees junior tennis instruction, tournaments, interclub play, staff mentoring, and coordination with the Racquet Club.

    The Tennis Director upholds Bay View’s long-standing tradition of excellence in tennis while promoting safety, sportsmanship, and Bay View Recreation’s mission of Fun and Recreation for All.
     

    Compensation & Employment Details

    • Pay: $8,000
    • Employment Type: Seasonal, full-time during Assembly Season. Housing is not provided.

    Schedule
    • June 1st–August 9th: Full-time, with availability for select weekends, tournaments, interclub play, and special events. Pre-season setup required.
     
    Organization Overview
    The Bay View Association (BVA) is a National Historic Landmark and an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit offering Chautauqua-style programming in Performing Arts, Worship & Religious Life, Education, and Recreation. The Bay View community includes 444 Victorian cottages, 2 inns, more than 30 historic buildings, and approximately 900 members along the shores of Lake Michigan.
     
    Key Responsibilities
    Program Leadership & Instruction
    • Serve as lead instructor for junior tennis lessons.
    • Plan and coordinate daily lesson plans, including warm-ups, drills, games, and match play.
    • Assign and supervise staff to ensure safe, effective, and engaging instruction.
    • Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to lessons to prepare courts, set up equipment, and welcome campers, families, and staff.
    • Offer private lessons by appointment in accordance with Bay View policies.
    Tournaments, Matches & Interclub Play
    • Serve as Junior Tournament Director, organizing and running all junior tournaments.
    • Assist with Men’s and Women’s Tournaments, ensuring appropriate staffing coverage and coordination.
    • Coordinate interclub matches with neighboring clubs and manage Bay View junior match play.
    • Submit tournament results and program highlights to the Town Crier, News Review, and Bay View Archives.
    Staff Training, Mentorship & Supervision
    • Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate youth tennis staff, fostering professionalism, teamwork, and leadership development.
    • Serve as a role model for Leaders-in-Training (LITs) and seasonal staff.
    • Address parent questions or concerns in a timely, professional manner.
    • Work closely with the Recreation Director on staff development and performance matters.
    Facilities & Equipment Management
    • Oversee daily maintenance and cleanliness of tennis courts, gazebo, shed, and equipment.
    • Monitor court conditions and report maintenance or safety concerns to the Recreation Director and Buildings & Grounds.
    • Coordinate with other Bay View tennis facilities (including Water Street) to maintain consistency and support shared needs.
    • Participate in pre- and post-season setup and takedown, including nets, equipment, supplies, and facility cleanup.
    Communication & Administration
    • Maintain accurate attendance records and ensure all participants are properly registered and paid.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for parents regarding lesson scheduling, camper participation, and program expectations.
    • Attend Racquet Club meetings and contribute content for the Racquet Club newsletter.
    • Coordinate with the Racquet Club on tournament logistics, schedules, and communications.
     
    Qualifications
    • Demonstrated tennis instruction experience and strong knowledge of the game.
    • Experience working with children, teens, and families in instructional or leadership roles.
    • Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
    • Willingness to pursue tennis professional certification if not currently certified.
    • Ability to make sound decisions and remain calm in a fast-paced, community-oriented environment.
    • Availability to work afternoons, select weekends, and special events throughout the season.
